About

James Chappell by Glory Samjolly. Painting Our Past, English Heritage

Glory Samjolly is a figurative painter and founder of "Black Aristocrat Art" platform. She is an Afro-Caribbean and British citizen at birth, assessing ethnic minority identities in the western world by creating iconic narratives through portraiture.

Living in London has taught Glory to use ethnic isolation as a platform of distinction rather than a victim collective. Painting is the bridge that transforms her thoughts into visuality. Each painting has a voice of its own; they ask questions, or sometime just make great statements.

Art history is a critical subject for her, because not long ago she realised that ethnic minorities in Britain find themselves out of place in the spaces of historical European art, hence their disinterest in the subject. Before a painting of hers reaches its finished form, it requires investigation into her sitter, and their autonomy in society.

The people she paints are artists, business owners and intellectuals sharing their unique stories which contribute to European art history.
